The second child of Gladys Gibson and Ernest E. Putnam, and at the age of two, moved with her family to Baltimore, Maryland where she grew up. It was in Baltimore that she developed her lifelong passions for painting, drawing, poetry, tennis, fashion, and above all, animals. Her Mother, Gladys, lost count of the number of rescues she brought home almost daily. Pleasant after a courageous battle with Vasculitis. Joy was born on November 5th, 1941, in the former logging camp known as Camp Worth in San Augustine County, Texas, to parents, Ras and Ruth McSwain. In 1964, Joy married Patrick Berry.
